You can apply it to compyte, or I can maintain it just for package -
that's not a problem.
Thanks for the report. For now I've just run modernize  on the
remaining Py2 bits of compyte and updated pycuda and pyopencl (in git)
to use the result. That should have at least made the code valid Python
2 and 3.
It's not the minimal set of changes, but we can always revert this if it
turns out to be necessary.
