Memory in wrong slots on porter, stout
by Andreas Kloeckner
Hi all,
I just discovered that it seems like the memory modules in porter and
stout have ended up in the wrong locations, and the CPU memory bandwidth
is a fair bit lower than it could be for that reason.
http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/motherboard/C606_602/MNL-1491.pdf#page=36
says for our configuration (two CPUs, eight DIMMs), the memory should be
in the following slots:
P1-DIMMA1/P1-DIMMB1/P1-DIMMC1/P1-DIMMD1
P2-DIMME1/P2-DIMMF1/P2-DIMMG1/P2-DIMMH1
According to
dmidecode -t memory | egrep 'Size|Locator' |grep -v Bank
the memory actually is in the following slots:
P1_DIMMA1: No Module Installed
P1_DIMMA2: No Module Installed
P1_DIMMB1: 8192 MB
P1_DIMMB2: 8192 MB
P1_DIMMC1: No Module Installed
P1_DIMMC2: No Module Installed
P1_DIMMD1: 8192 MB
P1_DIMMD2: 8192 MB
P2_DIMME1: No Module Installed
P2_DIMME2: No Module Installed
P2_DIMMF1: 8192 MB
P2_DIMMF2: 8192 MB
P2_DIMMG1: No Module Installed
P2_DIMMG2: No Module Installed
P2_DIMMH1: 8192 MB
P2_DIMMH2: 8192 MB
Stout is the same. So this should get fixed, ideally somewhat soon.

Hi all,
I will be shutting down porter and stout in about an hour to rearrange memory. This shouldn't take more than about 20 minutes. I'll send out a notification when they're back up.

Hi all,
Sometime in the next 24 hours I will shut down porter and stout to rearrange memory. I will send out another email about 1 hour before it happens. Contact me if this is going to be a problem.

porter/stout connectivity issues from UIUC wifi
by Andreas Kloeckner
Hi all,
You've probably had trouble getting to porter/stout from UIUC wifi over
the past week or so. If you did, I'm sorry--I ultimately caused this,
although I didn't mean to. (I installed a piece of software called
"docker" whose default IP range clashes with UIUC wifi.) At any rate,
this should be fixed now.
Sorry for the inconvenience!

Re: [Scicomp-machines] can't ssh to porter/stout

Something seems to be up with the University firewall. Luke had trouble
yesterday. Now that I'm on Wifi, I can't either. I didn't have trouble
from a wired connection. Interestingly, bouncing through any off-campus
host seems to make it work.
